What is the difference between Qur’anic Arabic and Modern Arabic?
Qur’anic Arabic (Classical Arabic) is the language of the Qur’an, based on the grammar and vocabulary of the 7th century. Modern Standard Arabic derives from it and is used today in the press, literature and education. The core grammar is shared; vocabulary and certain expressions differ. These two dimensions are deeply connected — our two methods are designed to complement each other.
Which method should I choose?
Qur’anic Arabic is for those whose goal is to understand the Qur’anic text. In Quest of the Arabic Language is for those who wish to discover the language through its cultural, literary and civilisational heritage. Both methods are highly complementary.
Do I need to know the alphabet to begin?
For Qur’anic Arabic, Unit 1 assumes knowledge of the alphabet. If you are a complete beginner, an adapted version is available.
Do students have to memorise texts without understanding them?
No. Neither method ever asks students to memorise a text without understanding it. Every example, verse or dialogue is explained and within the learner’s reach at each stage.
How long does it take to reach a good level?
The Qur’anic Arabic programme covers the equivalent of two years of study at 1.5–2 hours per week, with regular personal work. Progress depends on consistency and regularity, but concrete results are visible from the very first lessons.
Do the methods include audio recordings and exercises?
Yes. Each method includes audio recordings, interactive PowerPoint files (« Safar ») for oral practice, downloadable memo sheets and supplementary teaching materials for educators.
Can I learn on my own, without a class?
Absolutely. Both methods are designed for self-study: detailed explanations, answer keys and audio files. Online courses are also available for those who prefer guided learning.
Are the methods suitable for children?
Qur’anic Arabic is designed for adults and teenagers, but a large part of the teaching materials can be adapted for children.
