Good deeds

ุตุงู„ูุญุงุช / ุญูŽุณูŽู†ุงุช

These two terms have a very close usage. One may note, however, that the word ุญุณู†ุฉ is most often used in the singular in the Qur’an (twice in the plural). It is opposed to the word ุณูŠู‘ุฆุฉ. Its root means ยซ beautiful ยป, ยซ good ยป.

As for the word ุตุงู„ุญุฉ, it is used only in the plural and generally preceded by the verb ุนู…ูู„. Its root evokes something ยซ sound ยป, ยซ upright ยป, ยซ in good condition ยป. It has no systematic opposite, but it can be opposed to the root ู ุณ ุฏ (corrupt, degraded, unhealthy) or to the root ุณ ูŠ ุก, as for the term ุญุณู†ุฉ.

Bad deeds and sins

ุณูŽูŠูู‘ุฆุฉ

This term literally designates the ยซ bad ยป action. Its root is found in the Qur’anic term ุณููˆุก, ยซ evil ยป.

ุฅูู†ู’ ุชูŽุฌู’ุชูŽู†ูุจููˆุง ูƒูŽุจูŽุงุฆูุฑูŽ ู…ูŽุง ุชูู†ู’ู‡ูŽูˆู’ู†ูŽ ุนูŽู†ู’ู‡ู ู†ููƒูŽููู‘ุฑู’ ุนูŽู†ู’ูƒูู…ู’ ุณูŽูŠูู‘ุฆูŽุงุชููƒูู…ู’ ูˆูŽู†ูุฏู’ุฎูู„ู’ูƒูู…ู’ ู…ูุฏู’ุฎูŽู„ู‹ุง ูƒูŽุฑููŠู…ู‹ุง

If you avoid the gravest [actions] forbidden to you, We will efface your bad deeds and admit you to an honourable place. (4:31)

ุฅุซู’ู…

It is difficult to distinguish this term from the next (ุฐูŽู†ู’ุจ), both commonly meaning ยซ sin ยป. They are thus generally considered synonyms. One can nevertheless distinguish them by their etymology: the root of this first term evokes notably slowness and delay, and according to some linguists, ุฅุซู… would originally come from ยซ falling short ยป with respect to the good.

If you stretch out your hand to kill me, I will not stretch out my hand to kill you. I fear God, the Lord of the worlds. What I want is that you bear my sin and yours, and become one of the inhabitants of the Fire; and such is the reward of the unjust! (5:28-29)

ุฐูŽู†ู’ุจ

This term is built on the same root as the word ุฐูŽู†ูŽุจ, which designates ยซ the tail ยป. By extension, it refers to all that comes after โ€” and thus, the consequences. The word ุฐูŽู†ู’ุจ would thus originally be used to designate that whose consequences one disapproves, and consequently, sins.

ูˆูŽู„ูŽู‡ูู…ู’ ุนูŽู„ูŽูŠูŽู‘ ุฐูŽู†ู’ุจูŒ ููŽุฃูŽุฎูŽุงูู ุฃูŽู†ู’ ูŠูŽู‚ู’ุชูู„ููˆู†ู

They have a fault to reproach me with, and I fear they may kill me. (26:14)

ุฌูู†ุงุญ

The root of this term evokes inclination. It thus refers to actions that ยซ deviate ยป from good conduct, the ยซ deviances ยป.

ู„ูŽูŠู’ุณูŽ ุนูŽู„ูŽูŠู’ูƒูู…ู’ ุฌูู†ูŽุงุญูŒ ุฃูŽู†ู’ ุชูŽุจู’ุชูŽุบููˆุง ููŽุถู’ู„ู‹ุง ู…ูู†ู’ ุฑูŽุจูู‘ูƒูู…ู’

There is no blame upon you for seeking a favour from your Lord. (2:198)

ุญููˆุจ ูˆ ุญูŽูˆู’ุจ

This term evokes a failure in one’s duties, particularly towards dependents. It is, it seems, in this precise sense that it should be understood in the only Qur’anic verse where it appears:

ูˆูŽู„ูŽุง ุชูŽุฃู’ูƒูู„ููˆุง ุฃูŽู…ู’ูˆูŽุงู„ูŽู‡ูู…ู’ ุฅูู„ูŽู‰ ุฃูŽู…ู’ูˆูŽุงู„ููƒูู…ู’ ุฅูู†ูŽู‘ู‡ู ูƒูŽุงู†ูŽ ุญููˆุจู‹ุง ูƒูŽุจููŠุฑู‹ุง

Do not consume their property along with your own: it is truly a great failure of duty. (4:2)

ุฎูŽุทูŽุฃ ูˆ ุฎุทูŠุฆุฉ

The first of these two terms has a very broad sense, for it designates faults, whether voluntary or not. Linguists generally indicate that the second designates intentional faults.

ูˆูŽู…ูŽุง ูƒูŽุงู†ูŽ ู„ูู…ูุคู’ู…ูู†ู ุฃูŽู†ู’ ูŠูŽู‚ู’ุชูู„ูŽ ู…ูุคู’ู…ูู†ู‹ุง ุฅูู„ูŽู‘ุง ุฎูŽุทูŽุฃู‹

It is not for a believer (or loyal one) to kill another believer, except by mistake. (4:92)

ุฒูŽู„ูŽู„

The root of this term means ยซ to slip ยป. It is thus a ยซ false step ยป, that is, a bad action that is exceptional. The Qur’an uses only the verbal form of this root.

ูˆูŽู„ูŽุง ุชูŽุชูŽู‘ุฎูุฐููˆุง ุฃูŽูŠู’ู…ูŽุงู†ูŽูƒูู…ู’ ุฏูŽุฎูŽู„ู‹ุง ุจูŽูŠู’ู†ูŽูƒูู…ู’ ููŽุชูŽุฒูู„ูŽู‘ ู‚ูŽุฏูŽู…ูŒ ุจูŽุนู’ุฏูŽ ุซูุจููˆุชูู‡ูŽุง

Do not use your oaths as a means of deceit among yourselves, lest a foot slip after having been firm. (16:94)

ู„ูŽู…ูŽู…

The verb ุฃูŽู„ูŽู…ูŽู‘ means ยซ to lean furtively over something ยป or ยซ to glance quickly ยป. Consequently, according to commentators, ู„ูŽู…ูŽู… means either a bad action committed only once, or an action contemplated but not committed, or a small sin. One could thus translate it as ยซ a passing fault ยป.

Those who avoid the gravest sins and indecencies, committing only passing faults. Indeed, your Lord’s forgiveness is vast. He knows you best, since He created you from the earth and since you were embryos in the wombs of your mothers. So do not claim purity for yourselves: He knows best who is mindful. (53:32)

Rewards and retributions

ุซูˆุงุจ

The root of this word evokes return. It is thus literally what ยซ comes back to us ยป in retribution for our acts. The word ุซูˆุงุจ is always used positively in the Qur’an.

ููŽุขุชูŽุงู‡ูู…ู ุงู„ู„ูŽู‘ู‡ู ุซูŽูˆูŽุงุจูŽ ุงู„ุฏูู‘ู†ู’ูŠูŽุง ูˆูŽุญูุณู’ู†ูŽ ุซูŽูˆูŽุงุจู ุงู„ู’ุขุฎูุฑูŽุฉู ูˆูŽุงู„ู„ูŽู‘ู‡ู ูŠูุญูุจูู‘ ุงู„ู’ู…ูุญู’ุณูู†ููŠู†ูŽ

So God gave them the reward due to them here below, as well as the fine reward due to them in the Hereafter. And God loves the doers of good. (3:148)

ุฃุฌุฑ

This word originally designates the wage given to one whose services or goods are hired. It is therefore, so to speak, a form of ยซ contractual ยป reward. It is always used in a positive sense in the Qur’an.

ุฌุฒุงุก

This word refers to a reward not necessarily linked to a contract or a counterpart determined in advance. It can therefore be used for a reward granted gratuitously. It is used both positively and negatively in the Qur’an.

Note: one cannot conclude ยซ contracts ยป with God concerning the performance of bad actions. Perhaps this is the secret of these two distinct usages.
