To think, to suppose, to conjecture
ุธููู / ุญุณูุจ ูููู / ุฎุฑูุต ูููู
The terms ุธููู and ุญุณูุจ are often used as strict synonyms, and in the tafsรฎrs one is often explained by the other with the sense of ยซ to think ยป, ยซ to imagine ยป, ยซ to estimate ยป, ยซ to believe ยป, etc. Nevertheless, the first is rather an a priori judgement, which is why it often takes the sense of ยซ prejudice ยป, ยซ preconceived idea ยป, ยซ supposition ยป. This verb often has a negative sense in the Qur’an, but it is not necessarily pejorative, for it can equally express a simple ยซ opinion ยป.
The second is related to the verb of the same root ุญุณูุจ (with which it is confused), which means ยซ to count ยป. One can therefore say that ุญุณูุจ originally means, more properly, ยซ to estimate ยป, in the sense that it implies an ยซ evaluation ยป or ยซ measurement ยป of things. It also sometimes has the sense of ยซ to reckon on ยป.
As for the verb ุฎุฑูุต, alongside its sense of ยซ to conjecture ยป, it also means ยซ to lie ยป and ยซ to guess ยป. One may think that ยซ conjecture ยป approaches ยซ lying ยป when it is expressed against good sense, or when it proceeds from a form of denial. This is what this verb seems to express.

To doubt
ุงูู ูุชูุฑูู / ุงุฑุชุงุจ / ุดูู
Linguists affirm fairly unanimously that the word ุดูู designates a doubt proceeding from an absence of evidence, or from a situation where none of the possibilities seems preponderant. The root also means ยซ to pierce ยป, ยซ to pass through ยป. Perhaps one should see in it originally a thought that ยซ passes through ยป the mind, as in the expression ยซ to be pierced by doubt ยป. But this is only a suggestion.
As for the word ุฑูุจ, according to a dominant view, it designates a doubt proceeding rather from a confusion or a disturbance inherent in the person themselves. This is the connotation inspired by the root of this term. The verb ุฑุงุจ / ููุฑููุจ, speaking of milk, means ยซ to stir ยป, ยซ to churn ยป; speaking of a person, it means ยซ to be troubled ยป. It would thus again be, originally, a metaphorical use (language almost always starts from the concrete to go towards the abstract). This same verb, regarding a person, can also mean to lie, so that here it is about doubting with a connotation of ยซ accusation of lying ยป.
The root ู ุฑู means ยซ to rub ยป, but also ยซ to milk ยป and ยซ to extract ยป. The word ู ูุฑููุฉ means ยซ doubt ยป, but also ยซ controversy ยป โ in other words ยซ a controverted ยป or ยซ debatable matter ยป. Some linguists indicate that the link lies in the fact that argumentation consists in ยซ extracting ยป or ยซ drawing out ยป words from one’s interlocutor. The verb ุงูู ูุชูุฑู is thus the derived Form VIII of this root, taking the sense of ยซ to doubt ยป, with this same connotation of controversy.
